LG4 Weather Observer/Forecaster – Job Code: 600042

Job Summary:

Performs manages and directs weather operations for aviation activities, integrating current and forecasted atmospheric and space weather conditions into operations and operational planning.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Performs global analysis and forecast duties at weather and space centrals
  • Analyzes and evaluates meteorological data
  • Prepares mission forecasts, integrating weather analyses and reports, with radar and satellite imagery interpretations
  • Briefs aircrews and staff personnel on current and forecasted weather
  • Instructs personnel on the application of weather to operations and the interpretation and use of meteorological products
  • Conducts meteorological, astrophysical and geophysical studies
  • Provides meteorological consultation for research activities
  • Gathers and prepares data for specialized weather support activities
  • Writes directives o operational techniques and procedures that observe, analyze and forecast atmospheric and space phenomena
  • Interprets and integrates radar imagery and satellite data into forecast products and observation reports
  • Provides customers with time-sensitive forecast and observation support critical to successful mission


    Knowledge & Skills:

  • Working experience with FMQ-18 Rader
  • Knowledge of Tactical Forecasting Systems
  • Working knowledge of Doppler NexGen

    Physical Requirements:

    Living and working conditions at the assignment location could be remote and uncomfortable. Long hours, exposure to weather and hazardous conditions. Personnel should be aware of moving on short notice and under adverse conditions.

    Experience:

    Typically, a minimum of one (1) year of experience in a weather station or forecasting unit as well as one (1) year experience in advanced weather assignments.

    Education:

    Bachelor’s degree in meteorology or atmospheric science is desirable. Two (2) years of experience in a related field may be substituted for each year of the four (4) years of college.
